Rev. Alvie Gray, age 79, of Hamilton, passed away in Hospice of Hamilton at Sunrise Saturday, July 27, 2002, at 10:40 a.m. He was born in White Star, Kentucky in January 27, 1923, the son of Elbert and Rose (Sasser) Gray. Rev. Gray was a member of the Timberhill Baptist Church, the Ben Franklin Lodge #719 F&AM, the Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati, was a Veteran of WWII with United States Army Air Corps in 1943 and was employed as a carpenter for Local #113 for 30 years, retiring in 1977.

Rev. Gray was the founder and pastor of the Freedom Baptist Church in his home on Stahlheber Road on August 10, 1963; on December 8, 1963, he moved the church to 5th and Walnut Streets in Hamilton and in January of 1966 purchased the church on Fairview Avenue; retiring from active pastorship and became an evangelist until poor health prevented him from active ministry. He participated in the dedication of the new location of Freedom Baptist Church on Millville Avenue in March of 1992.

On March 4, 1944, in Hamilton, he was married to Mary Bowling and she preceded him in death on June 26, 2002. He is survived by two sons, James and his wife Debbie Gray and Joe and his wife Barbara Gray, both of Hamilton; four daughters, Margaret Carroll of Hamilton, Marlene and her husband Butch Willis, Marsha and her husband Glen Bufler of Midland, TX and Marissa and her husband Jeff Shoopman of Hamilton; and one sister, Jewel Bowling of Hamilton. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, Michelle, Jay, Brad, Shannon, Stephanie, Stacie, Rob, Kevin, Amie, Kyle, Bethany, Kristen, Koti, Donnie and Daniel and nine great-grandchildren, Madison, Dale, Alex, Samantha, Ashley, Ryan, Blake, Tyler and Chase. He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Beverly and Marcella; two brothers, Jim and Joe Gray and seven sisters, Susan Gray, Gertrude Davis, Lucy Gray, Millie Strunk, Martha Depew, Pearl Motzer and Dora Motzer.

Funeral services will be held at the Timberhill Baptist Church, 44 Timberhill Drive, Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Scott Miller, Pastor officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park. Visitation will be held at the Brown Dawson Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Avenue Tuesday, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Ben Franklin Lodge #719 F&AM will hold services at the funeral home at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday followed by Scottish Rite Ring Service.
