BERLIN - Vaughn G. Adams, 76, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at his home.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home in Barre.

BERLIN - Vaughn G. Adams, 76, of Highland Avenue, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at home with his family. He had been in ill health for the past four years.

Born on Sept. 14, 1936, in Montpelier, he was the son of Kenneth G. and Evelyn L. (Stewart) Adams. He attended East Montpelier Elementary School and received his GED from Montpelier High School. Later, he served in the United States Air Force in France and Germany.

On June 30, 1962, Vaughn married Thanna L. Dolan in Morrisville. Following their marriage, they first made their home in East Montpelier before moving to Berlin where they had resided for 45 years.

For 38 years, he worked for the Union Mutual Fire Insurance Co. in Montpelier until his retirement.

Vaughn was a member of the First Congregational Church of Berlin where he had served as a trustee and on the board of deacons. He was also a member of the Vermont Fieldman Association and a 50-year member of the Wyoming Masonic Lodge 80 of Plainfield. In earlier years, he served on the Parent Teacher Neighbor Association of Berlin.

He enjoyed all types of sports, camping, deer hunting and golfing. He was an avid Red Sox fan and liked spending their winters in Bowling Green, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Thanna Adams, of Berlin; a son, Brent Adams, and his wife, Carolyn, of Warren; three daughters, Sheila Gariboldi, of Barre, Beth Cody and her husband, Stephen, of Barre, and Marcia Hudson and her husband, Brad, of Calais; nine grandchildren, Tiana Gariboldi, Ryan Gariboldi, Ricky Gariboldi, Bailee Hudson, Jayden Hudson, Colby Hudson, Fiona Adams, Shannon Adams and Dalton Cody; a brother, Kenneth A. Adams, and his wife, Jacqueline, of Berlin; two sisters, Brenda Bashaw and her husband, Art, and Sandra Clark, all of Barre; many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, a brother-in-law, Frank Clark Jr., predeceased him.

A funeral service and celebration of Vaughn's life will be held in the First Congregational Church of Berlin on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. Entombment will take place in the Hooker and Whitcomb Vault in Barre to await later interment in the Berlin Corner Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

BERLIN - The funeral service and celebration of life for Vaughn G. Adams, 76, of Highland Avenue, was held on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the First Congregational Church of Berlin. He died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at his home.

The Rev. Dereen Vanderlinde-Abernathy, pastor of the church, officiated. The lighting of the candles was by Vaughn's granddaughters Bailee Hudson and Jayden Hudson. The prelude was performed by harpists and granddaughters Fiona Adams and Shannon Adams. Organist and pianist Trina Newland accompanied the congregation in the hymns "Faith of Our Fathers" and "How Great Thou Art" and accompanied friend Judy Cookson in "The Lord's Prayer." Grandson Dalton Cody sang the hymn "Amazing Grace."

Scripture readings from the Old and New Testaments were by daughter Beth Cody, and words of remembrance were offered by grandson Ryan Gariboldi.

Entombment took place in the Hooker and Whitcomb Vault in Barre to await later interment in the Berlin Corner Cemetery. The bearers were nephews Andy Adams, Eric Bashaw, Gregg Bashaw, Doug Clark and Mike Clark.

Following the service, family and friends gathered in the Parish Hall for a time of sharing and refreshments.

Members of the Mad River Masonic Lodge 77 of Waitsfield and the Wyoming Masonic Lodge 80 of Plainfield provided the Masonic service on Saturday evening at 7:45 p.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, with Gerry Maynard as master and Charlie Codling as chaplain.
