Joseph Gilman Allen was a laborer 1855-1880, ship's carpenter 1861, 1864, carpenter 1863, and clammer 1866-1867. He lived and died at the same house at Western Avenue in Essex. On July 1st, 1862 he was enrolled as a private in Company B of the 7th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteers for six months of the Civil War. He served at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor and was discharged on December 31st, 1862. He is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, dark complexion and dark hair with hazel eyes. He married late, at age 33. Joseph and Sarah were married by Elam Burnham of Hamilton on May 24, 1863 in Essex. He is buried in the Spring Street Cemetery in Essex, Massachusetts. He was granted a military pension of $20 a month on March 2, 1907. After his death his widow received a $12 a month pension.
