Hugh J. Acker, 86, of 451 Whitney Valley Heights, passed away Tue (Apr 15, 2008) at St. James Mercy Hospital.

Born in Hartsville, Jun 10, 1921, the son of Francis M. Jr. and Edna King Acker, he had resided in Hornell and Almond most of his life.

Hugh was a member of the Hillside Baptist Church. During his lifetime, Hugh built three cottages on Conesus Lake where his family maintained a summer home until 1982. Along with his full-time employment, Hugh also worked part time at many area service stations. After his retirement from Foster-Wheeler, Hugh joined his son in business working as a delivery man for the Stationery Center, in Hornell. Upon the closing of the family business, Hugh obtained part-time employment as a Green Thumb worker for the NYSDOT office building in Hornell. Hugh ended his employment career in 2006 at the age of 85.

Hugh had a friendly, outgoing personality. His love of people and conversation will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his wife Velma Foreman Acker in Dec 2007, three sisters Marilyn Wyant, Eleanor Acker and Lois Nickerbocker, and his brother, Lawrence "Bill" Acker.

He is survived by one son, Gary (Phyllis) Acker of Almond; three granddaughters, Amanda Acker of VA, Elizabeth Acker of Almond and Jennifer Acker of Almond.

The family will be present from 4-7 pm Fri at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St, Hornell, where funeral services will take place at the conclusion of calling hours at 7 pm, with Pastor Robert Bennett and Pastor Craig Brittingham officiating. Burial will be in Hornell Rural Cemetery.
