Stephen D. Benson, 58, of Sun City West, Ariz., passed away July 28, 2007, at home.

Born March 9, 1949, in DeKalb, Ill., he was the son of Arlie J. (Humes) and Paul M. Benson.

Stephen proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1968-69 in Vietnam. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in DeKalb.

The family would like to thank all the nurses, doctors and staff of Hospice of the Valley for their constant care, support and kindness over the last several months. They were truly a godsend and angels in their own right.

Stephen is survived by his fiancée and companion, Wretha Kemp of Sun City West, and a son, Michael (Andrea) Benson, and two granddaughters, Isabelle and Olivia, all of St. Louis. He was a loving brother to Robert (Mimi) Benson of North Carolina, Ron Austin of Sycamore, Larry (Diana) Austin of Chicago, Tracy (Rick) Tracy of Wisconsin, Becky Benson of Wheaton and Vicky (Rick) Wagner of Florida.

Steve will be missed by his many nephews and nieces, Jim (Priscilla) Benson, Paul Benson, Kevin and Jeffery Austin, Eric, Erin and Dusty Tracy, and Tyler and Zander Wagner. Other survivors include numerous uncles, aunts and cousins. Steve leaves behind many dear friends and family members, and he will be deeply missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his maternal grandparents, Molly and Calvin Humes; and his paternal grandparents, Adrie and Marion Benson.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Full military rites will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion following the service on Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Hospice of the Valley, 9720 W. Peoria Ave., Suite 128, Peoria, AZ 85345.
