Wellington BJ778 aircraft took off from the RAF Croft airfield on a mine laying operation near the Frisian Islands in the North Sea. Hit by flak while returning to base, the Wellington crashed on Black Intake Moor, near the village of Chop Gate near the Hambleton District in North Yorkshire, killing all five aircrew members.
The casualties of this accident were:-
RAF Sergeant Oscar Philip Edwin Ronald ADLAM,
RAFVR Sergeant William BALL,
Sergeant Arnold Charles CLIFFORD,
RAFVR Flying Officer Bryan DUNN and
RAFVR Sergeant William Charles Ivor JELLEY.
