Born in Beaumont, Texas, son of Sam Barranco, jr and Leola Barranco, Sam attended Texas A&M UNIV. WITH A MAJOR IN ZOOLOGY IN 1960, RECEIVING A BS DEGREE AND IN 1962 An MS DRGREE IN RADIATION BIOLOGY. IN 1969 HE RECEIVED A PHD IN CELL BIOLOGY FROM JOHN HOPKINS UNIV. FOLLOWING THIS EDUCATION HE CAME TO THE UNIV. OF TEXAS CANCER CENTER, M. D. ANDERSON cancer hospital IN HOUSTON, TX TO STUDY WITH DR. RONALD HUMPHREY. THEIR STUDIES WERE FROM 1969 TO 1971. WORKING WITH DR MARVIN RHOMSDAHL AT ANDERSON HE,DR. HUMPHREY AND DR. RHOMSDAHL WROTE A WELL KNOWN PAPER, PUBLISHED IN THE JOURNAL, CANCER RESEARCH, ENTITLED THE "RADIATION RESPONSE OF HUMAN MALIGNANT MELANOMA CELLS". DR BARRANCO JOINED THE DEPT. OF CELL BIOLOGY AT THE UNIV. OF TEXAS MEDICAL SCHOOL IN GALVESTON, TX WHERE HE REMAINED FOR SEVERAL YEARS. HE DEVOTED THE REMAINDER OF HIS CAREER IN CANCER RESEARCH TO DEVELOPING TREATMENT PROTOCOLS FOR MALIGNANT DISEASE. AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH HE HAD HIS RESEARCH AFFILIATION AS OWNER OF A PRIVATE LABORATORY IN VIRGINIA BEACH.DR BARRANCO IS AUTHOR/CO ARTHOR OF NEARLY 100 SCIENTIFIC PAPERS.

ON A NEIGHBORHOOD JOG ONE FALL MORNING HE CAME INTO HIS DRIVEWAY AND COLLAPSED WITH A CARDIAC ARREST. A NEIGHBOR SAW HIS COLLAPSE, BUT BY THE TIME EMS ARRIVED IT WAS TO LATE TO REVIVE HIM.

HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE BARBARA, TWO DAUGHTERS, RHYS LUTSKY AND MELISSA BLAKEMAN, HIS FATHER SAM BARRANCO, JR, AND A BROTHER , VICTOR BARRANCO.
