Civil War Union Army Soldier. Enlisted in the Union Army on August 13, 1861. Kiled while trying to reload the "Gettysburg Gun" of Battery B, 1st Rhode Island Volunteer Light Artillery (Brown's Battery) during the repulse of Pickett's Charge on the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. The muzzle of the gun had been damaged by an enemy shell and while trying to reload it the men got their own shell lodged in the barrel making it totally unserviceable. Privates Alexander Gardiner and William Jones were also killed during this action. Corporal Ballou had been wounded by a bullet in the thigh during the previous day's fighting, but remained with his battery. (Additional infomation by Russ Dodge)
