Catherine Stevenson was married twice and had seven children who lived to adulthood. She was divorced her first husband, Jesse B. Lester, with whom she had three children, William, Olive and Mary. She married her second husband, William Keating Hewson, with whom she had Emily, Ella, Rachel and Thomas. William Hewson tragically died after eight years of marriage leaving her with four small children to raise alone. She and William had a general store in Richlands, Virginia, which she continued to run after his death. She died at age 57 from lung cancer and breast cancer. Family stories are that she was a very tiny, very beautiful woman.
Catherine is buried in Birmingham, Alabama; however, she did not live there. She was born in Maiden Spring, Virginia, and lived most of her life in Richlands, Virginia. When she was dying from cancer, she went to Birmingham to live with her daughter, Mary Lester Davis, who was a nurse. When Catherine died, Mary had her buried at the Elmwood cemetery the very next day.
