Per his obit: "Kenneth grew up on the family farm in rural Jackson Co., Missouri. Following his high school graduation in 1941 and the invasion of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Ken was accepted to the Naval Aviation V-5 training program. After completing the program, he was awarded his pilot's wings and commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was selected to train other pilots from the U.S. and Great Britain. Following the end of World War II, he returned to civilian life. In addition to working with his father and grandfather on the farm raising fruits and vegetables, Ken managed large truck stops. Later, he took over the family business, Farrand Farms, and changed it to a greenhouse business growing the quality vegetable plants and flowers for which it is still known. Ken enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking and following sports. He also indulged his passion for mushroom hunting."
