BRIGHTON

Richard Blair Atchison, 63, died suddenly at 10:01 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at his residence.

He was born in Houston, Texas, on Jan. 24, 1950, and graduated from Jersey Community High School with the class of 1968. He soon entered the U.S. Marine Corp., and served his country admirably during the Vietnam War.

After his return, he began his 42-year career with the Olin Corp. in East Alton, retiring in April 2011, as a Senior Design Engineer.

Rick was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, brother, and uncle and was truly a family oriented man. He loved to entertain his grandchildren and treated the older ones to Grandpa's John Deere rides. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and enjoyed fishing and camping, his favorite spot being Shelbyville Lake.

He married the former Elaine (Westbrook) Henry on May 22, 1999, in Godfrey, and they have enjoyed the past 14 years together.

Surviving are his wife, Elaine Atchison of Brighton; a son, Richard E. Atchison of Alton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle J. and Brady Lambert of Jerseyville, and Rachael and Nathan Jurgena of Maryville; three step children and their spouses, Robert and Jennifer Henry III of Godfrey, Robin Henry of Brighton, and Shannon and Amanda Henry of Nottingham, England; nine grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Regina and Jack Cambron of Brighton and Toni and Allen Darr of Carrollton; a brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Thelma Powers of Grafton; a special aunt, Natalie Umphress of Carrollton; and numerous nieces and nephews; and his favorite canine companion, Misty.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur "Dutch" and Emma Louise (Vahle) Powers; a brother, Arthur "Artie" Powers; a niece, September Cambron; and a nephew, Douglas Powers.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7. Rev. John Gibson will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492.

Cremation will take place after the services, with private entombment of his ashes at the Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.

Memorials may be given to the Oasis Womens Center in Alton.
