8251206 Private Timothy James Alpin, of the 2nd Commando Regiment based in Sydney, New South Wales; Aged 38 years, together with Pte Scott Travis Palmer and Pte Benjamin Chuck were serving with the Special Operations Task Group when they lost their lives in a helicopter crashed during a night patrol south of Kandahar, Afghanistan on Opertion Slipper.
Pte Alpin was married to Natasha and the father of Ty, Shane, Josie and Daniel.
Pte Alpin was awarded a State Military Funeral attended by the Governor General, the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Governor of Queensland, Queensland Premier and Leader of the State Opposition along with distinguished Military personnel, family and friends.
He had a proud career in the Australian Army staring with his enlistment in the Australian Army Reserves, then transferring to the Regular Army where he reached the rank of Sergeant.
In a bid to successfully completed the Commando Selection and Training Course and Commando Reinforcement Cycle he willing took a reduction in his rank from Sergeant to Private.
He was an outstanding and dedicated Commando who was highly respected and well liked. This was his second tour to Afghanistan and he was serving with the SOTG as a team demolitions specialist.
He has been awarded the Australian Active Service Medal with East Timor, Iraq and ICAT clasps, the Infantry Combat Badge, United Nations Medal with Ribbon UNTAET, the IRAQ Campaign Medal, the Australian Defence Medal, the Defence Long Service Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. Also the Returned from Active Service Badge from a previous deployment.
During his Military Career he was deployed on the following Operations:
Operation Tanager (East Timor)in 2000, Operation Bastille (Middle East) in 2003 and Operation Slipper (Afghanistan) 2009 and again in 2010.
They shall grow not old.
As we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning,
We shall remember them.
