Julia was the daughter of Robert Harlin Patch and Hila Louise Moore Patch, their 4th child of 7.
Julia was the Sister to: Robert Harlin Jr., Helen Albertine, William Stedman, Calvin Benjamin, Hila Amelia Patch Witt and Bessie Tozer Patch Patch.
Julia married first to: Robert Delos Smith, M.D., on June 28, 1900 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
They moved to Yerington, Lyon County, Nevada in 1904 so he could practice medicine. They had a very good practice going and he had just helped build a hospital. Her first child Harlin Delos, was born in 1907 in San Francisco and then she had Catherine Louise "Dolly" in March of 1913 there in Mason. Dr. Robert went on a trip to a medical convention by train at the end of September and when he arrived in Denver, Colorado he wired home for his bathrobe as he was starting a cold, he developed pneumonia and on October 2, 1913 he died. Their baby was only six months old and now they all were without Robert, his brother Jud was working as a Pharmacist and the elected Mayor there in Yerington but they only stayed for a short time. The family eventually moved in 1916 to Berkeley, California so Julia could find work. Because by January 2, 1920 Julia was working as a Bookkeeper for a Sewing Machine Company.
Julia married a second time to Robert Arthur Eaton in 1922, and divorced him very quickly.
By 1925 she and her little family moved to Fresno, where Harlin graduated from Fresno High School. By 1927 he was working as a Pharmacist Clerk at Rexall Drug in Mariposa, and getting married. He was still there in the early part of 1928. Because by November 1928 he was living back in Fresno on Divisadero with his wife and new son and working as a Pharmacist Clerk for Casner Drug Company. On April 2, 1930 we find them all living at 2536 E. Madison Ave. in Fresno again while Julia worked in an Art Shop and Harlin worked as a Photographer for Fresno Morning Republican Newspaper. By 1932 She was working as a confy in a Lady's Hat Shop and they had purchased their home at 4762 E. Tulare. And by June, Catherine had married William Taff. Along came another grandson, Ward in July 1933. In 1935 Harlin and his family moved to Sacramento and Papa John was openly courting Grandma Julia.
She married a third time to John Edward "Papa John" Ward on June 26, 1932 in Fresno. They had known each other for many years and their friendship had gone back as far as when he was married to Florence Snowden and she married to Dr. Robert, they all lived in Yerington, Nevada and had been good friends.
On September 9, 1939 we find Julia and Mr. Ward happily living at 118 Island Avenue in Reno, Nevada. Julia eventually sold the house in Fresno after "Papa John" died in 1953 while they were on a holiday in Tuscon, Arizona.
Julia and Catherine moved to Sacramento to be nearer to Harlin and his family and Catherine met and then married Robert Sharrer. Julia bought a place at 2700 1/2 Franklin Boulevard and this is where she was living when she passed away.
Grandma Julia was a very civic minded lady. She was an active Member of the Order of Eastern Star, a Member of the Daughter of the American Revolution and ?? (Ask Dad).
Grandma Julia left behind: her daughter Catherine Sharrer (Robert), her son Harlin had predeceased her, her Daughter-in-Law Evelyn Smith and four Grandchildren, Harlin Smith Jr., Ward Taff Sharrer, Roger Sharrer and Carole Sharrer.
