Banker. Ames, a Civil War Veteran, was very involved in enforcing Reconstruction policies after the war. It is believed Ames' actions during the Reconstruction era and that his son, Adelbert Ames, a Union general and a Medal of Honor recipient, had angered the James and Younger gangs. Their anger evolved into the doomed plan to rob Ames' bank in Northfield. Jesse and Frank barely escaped from the deadly shootout with the citizens of Northfield, and ended the careers of the Youngers.
