Clifford was the son of Vance Zebulon and Delia Johnson Cook, originally from Watauga, North Carolina. When he was a child, Clifford was nicknamed by his mother who called him "Buster". The name "stuck" but was later shortened to "Bus". His nickname came in handy when he drove a school bus for the Winnett, Montana schools. Clifford's "other jobs" included owning a service station and bulk fuel plant in Winnett, Montana as well as ranching north of Winnett. He married Guri Ann Iverson on July 7, 1937. They made their home at Dovetail, near the sheep ranch of his in-laws, Tom and Annette Iverson. The family moved to town in 1960 when they bought the service station in Winnett. Bus and Guri had six children: Ileen, Tom, Cliff, Anita, Bill and Pat.
