Birth: 1857
Texas, USA
Death: Dec., 1884
Holt County
Missouri, USA

Even though he was born in Texas, George Garrett's family was originally from Powell County, Kentucky. George was a son of Wesley Garrett (1828-1930) and Amanda Welch (1832-abt 1866). He married Louesa "Lou" Morton (1860-1949) in Powell County, Kentucky on January 1, 1881. The couple moved to Indiana where their eldest son, Weeden Andrew Garrett was born near Logansport in March, 1882. It is not known if they stayed in Indiana for long or if they attempted to move somewhere else before a second son, William, was born in Holt County, Missouri in August, 1884. One thing is certain, George did not purchase land in Holt County. The reason is not known, but my speculation is that the family had not lived in the area long enough. There were other Garretts in the area, cousins from the same part of Kentucky where George and Lou grew up, who had settled not far from Craig in northern Holt County. Perhaps George was staying with some of this family, but one thing is certain, an unforeseen accident soon befell George Garrett. In November, 1884, the "Holt County Sentinal" had this notation: "On the 20th, George Garrett received severe injuries by being thrown from his wagon, by his team running away." Garrett apparently lived for some time following the accident, but he did not finish out the calendar year. He was only twenty-seven or twenty-eight years of age at the time of his death. He was buried at the Caton Family Cemetery, which was at the time the main cemetery for the community nearby. His widow Lou and the two children left the area following this and went back to live near family in Stanton, Kentucky.
