'Copter Crash Kills Rural Salina Marine

The funeral for Marine Cpl. Gale D. Abrams, 23, Salina RFD 1, will be at 9 am Tuesday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Msgr. William Merchant officiating.

Cpl. Abrams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Omer L. Abrams of the Hedville community, was killed Tuesday when a helicopter crashed and burned in Black Star Canyon in Orange county, Calif.

Cpl. Abrams was a crew chief aboard the 'copter. He was stationed at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Facility, Santa Anna, Calif.

Also killed int he crash was the pilot, Maj. Larry J. Bagwell, 34, Santa Ana.

A third crewman, Robert Trigalet, 24, was hospitalized.

Besides the parents, Cpl. Abrams is survived by a brother, Gene, Romulus, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Carpenter, Salina RFD 1, and his grandmother, Mrs. Alma Tunnell, Milan, Mo.

A rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm Monday at the Guy R. Ryan Sons mortuary.

Burial will be in the war veterans plot of Gypsum Hill cemetery.

The funeral for Marine Cpl. Gale D. Abrams, 23, Salina RFD 1, will be at 9 am Tuesday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Msgr. William Merchant officiating.

Survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Omer L. Abrams, Hedville; a brother, Gene, Romulus, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Carpenter, Salina RFD 1; a half-brother, Robert Cotter, Taylor, Mich,; and his grandmother, Mrs. Alma Tunnell, Milan, Mo.

Rosary will be at 7:30 pm Monday at Guy R. Ryan Sons mortuary. Burial will be in the war veterans plot, Gypsum Hill cemetery.

Corporal Gale D. Abrams was killed in a helicopter accident when the CH-46 Sea Knight that he was riding in during a routine night mission crashed. The aircraft had departed Marine Corps Air Facility Santa Ana, CA when it crashed and burned near Hidden Ranch near Black Star Canyon. Also killed in the crash was Major Larry L. Bagwell. Both Marines were assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Training Squadron 301 (HMMT-301) at the time of the accident.
