Nellie was my great-grand aunt. She was one of thirteen children born to former slaves Columbus & Eliza Johnson. In 1984 Nellie graduated from Scotia Seminary, Concord, NC.. She taught in the Charlotte Public Schools and on June 1, 1910 married Dr. Edward R. Dudley, Jr, who was a student at Biddle College and became a dentist. They had one son, Edward R.,III, who became the first U.S. Ambassador to Liberia during Harry Truman's presidency. Nellie's grave marker is inscribed with her d.o.d. and "Wife of E.R.".
