Charlie lived a short life, but was full of joy. He is deeply missed by his family and friends.

Charles ``Charlie'' Ray Motes Jr. was only 8, but he carried around dictionaries and loved to read maps.

``Wherever he would go he'd carry his red book bag with his Goosebump books and three dictionaries,'' said the boy's 15-year-old sister, Christine Olander. ``He was real smart.''

On Saturday afternoon Charlie, who lived on Margrace Road, was playing football with some neighborhood children, Christine said. On his way home about 4:30 p.m. he tried to cross Margrace Road, but was hit by a car. He died at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte about five hours later.

The boy ran into the path of a car driven by Tracy Clark Goyette, 29, of Kings Mountain, said Highway Patrol Trooper P.W. Glover.

``The young man was standing on the left shoulder of the road,'' Glover said. ``He just ran right into the path of the car.''

The boy was with his 12-year-old brother at the time of the accident, the trooper said.

The speed limit on Margrace Road is 55 mph, the Highway Patrol said, and Goyette was driving about 45 mph. No charges were filed, reports said.

Charlie was a second-grader at Grover Elementary. He was going to turn 9 this month, Christine said.

A typical little brother, he liked to tag along and hang out with Christine and her boyfriend. And they didn't mind.

``We'd sit down and watch TV and movies with him, and we'd play Sega,'' she said. ``If I went somewhere, he'd want to go. He really looked up to me.''

Wendy Wease, 12, is a friend of the family and lives nearby on Margrace Road.

Wendy said she saw Charlie nearly every day, and he liked her cooking.

``He loved my spaghetti, and about anything I cooked,'' she said.

``He talked a lot, and always kidded around,'' Wendy said. ``We loved him.''

A service for Charlie is at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Gaston Memorial Park. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. today at Ward Funeral Home.

Charlie was a native of Cleveland County, the son of Charles R. Motes Sr. and Sharline O Motes Bridges. In addition to his parents, survivors include his brothers, Jason and Chuck, and sister, Christine; grandparents, Leonard and May Motes of Winder, Ga., and Lindy and Shirley Wise of Cleveland, Ohio; and great-grandparents, John and Margaret Wise of Cleveland.
