Guy Allen Baber, Jr. passed away Thursday, January 1st, 2015. He was 91 years old.
Guy was born in Haslam, Texas, November 28, 1923 to Gertrude and Guy Baber, Sr.
Preceeding him in death was his only sister and sibling, Lena Baber Henning of Sulphur La.
Guy grew up in Lufkin and Wiergate Tx. Wiergate was a sawmill town where his father was the local store manager. Guy commented that the store reminded him of Walmart, having everything from groceries to caskets.
He was a member of The Boy Scouts of America Troop 22. Organized in 1933, the troop ended its charter in 1942 when the sawmill was closed. The Wier Long Leaf Lumber Company donated time and resources to the scouts, making Troop 22 one of the best in Texas. Guy Baber Jr. was one of two young boys who received the rank of an Eagle Scout. Scouting and Wiergate was a very special and meaningful part of Guy's life. He graduated from Wiergate High School in 1941.
Guy was a proud member of the Texas A&M class of '45 and like many young men had his college years interrupted because of the war.
In WWll Guy served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Coast Artillery Corps. Guy's commander formed a baseball team to lift the spirits of the troops and Guy played on the team. He returned to Texas A&M where he graduated in 1948.
Guy had an attendance streak of 40 plus A&M football games even though he lived a 9 hour drive away. In 1994 Guy was inducted into the Texas A&M Letterman's Association Hall of Honor as a distinguished Alumni and was a founding member of the 12th Man Foundation. Guy and Mary began taking their son Guy III to Texas A&M when he was two years old. Guy's son John, class of 79, was offered a football scholarship in 1975. Guy's grandchildren Guy Allen Baber IV and Lauren Baber Hill are Texas A&M Summa Cum Laude graduates, class of 05 and 07.
After college Guy began a training program with National Oil Well Supply Company. His first assignment was in Odessa, Texas later moving to Snyder, Eunice and finally Hobbs New Mexico.
While in Snyder Texas, Guy met Mary Frances Echols. Mary was a teller in the Snyder National Bank. Guy came to her window inquiring about his bank statement and why it had been closed. Mary informed him that his bank account was with another bank in another town. Later he returned to her window and asked her out for lunch. Being the only single man in Snyder that she knew who had joined the First Baptist Church, Mary accepted his invitation. Guy told Mary not to accept any other dates after Monday. Married on September 2, 1950, Guy and Mary were married for 64 years. Their marriage was built on God, family and faith. Moving to Hobbs in the early 1950's they joined Hobbs First Baptist Church where they have been faithful members to date.
After working for National Supply for several years, Guy had an opportunity to buy into a Well Servicing Company with a friend, Sam Sayers. Wanting to settle his family in Hobbs, he bought out his friend and began Baber Well Servicing Company of Hobbs. Expanding his company over the years, he was very involved with The Association of Oilwell Servicing Contractors. He and Mary attended National Conventions in all parts of the United States and Guy served A.O.S.C. as chairman and President.
Guy loved golf and played regularly at the Hobbs Country Club. As was his nature, he once tried to give Lee Trevino golfing tips. He was president of the Hobbs Country Club during times of major expansion and remodeling.
Having been an avid athlete himself, Guy passed on his skills by coaching sons Guy and John as well as many young boys in Hobbs. Along with coaching, Baber Well Service sponsored a little league baseball and football team for over 30 years.
Guy enjoyed playing cards, traveling to football games, watching sports and fishing in Mexico. In his later years Guy enjoyed gardening, art projects and making trophies for his grandson and the Hobbs Eagles.
Guy loved God, he loved his family, his country and his school. He was a man of commitment, passion and loyalty. He gave enormous amount of his time, energy and resources to many worthwhile endeavors. He will be missed.
