| Birth: | Nov. 9, 1894 | | Death: | Sep. 23, 1980, USA | Eddie McElligott was a golf professional. He was from Minneapolis and was a pro in Souix Falls, SD. before being appointed head professional of the White Bear Yacht Club near Saint Paul in 1938 and left in 1945. He was subsequently pro at Interlachten Golf Club in Minneapolis. Later he was pro at Great Bend Kansas in the Early 50's, and later at Ellenwood, Kansas. He retired to Florida and lived in a mobile home near Palm Springs.
From a newspaper article in Florida when Ed was 78 years old:
"Another of the Seniors competitors, 78 year old Eddie McElligott, of suburban West Palm Beach, has played in 27 Senior's tournaments. Last weekend he placed second in his age group. Mc Elligott worked as a golf professional throughout the Midwest, after he became the first man in Minneapolis to turn pro.
He worked with country clubs in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Oklahoma, Michigan, Kansas, Montana and later in New York. "I was a gypsy pro" McElligott laughed, recalling his career which spanned a half century.
After returning from the European front in World War II, McElligott said he planed to take things easy for a while, But he was offered a position in Butte, Mont, and off he went. "A unique place," he said of his two years in the West. "The golf course was on the side of a granite mountain and only two or three holes were of grass."
A charter member of the PGA, McElligott said he was "born 50 years too soon" for professional golf. "Of eight tournaments that I won, I don't think I got $3,000. And look at what they get today," McElligott said. Family links: Children: Edmond B McElligott (1927 - 1966)* *Calculated relationship
