Gustave Baumhoefer was the son of Westphalian immigrant Frederick H. Baumhoefer (1836-1924) and Louisa Baumhoefer. His mother must have died between 1876 and 1880, as in 1880, Gustave's father had a wife named Caroline and a number of step-brothers and sisters with the last name "Horstmann."
At the time of his death, Gustave was retired from Missouri Pacific Railway, where he had worked as a "train auditor." He had moved from the Washington, Missouri area to St. Louis sometime between 1880 and 1900, where he worked as a switchman.
He apparently never married. When he died, his residence was listed as Terminal Hotel, Little Rock. He must have been a Mason--the informant on his death certificate was listed as "Masonic Records."
