Mrs. Amelia Ackerman.
Amelia E. Smith, oldest daughter of Nathan and Keziah Smith was born in Morgan county, Ohio, August 26, 1846, and died at the home of her brother, Eli Smith northwest of Osceola, Saturday, January 16, 1926, aged 79 years, 4 months and 20 days. She came to Iowa with her parents when eight years old and was educated in the schools of Clarke county and taught in the public schools of this county, going from here to Nebraska, where she was one of the pioneer teachers. She became a member of the M. E. church when 16 years old. She was united in marriage with William Hackerman (sic) October 30, 1889. He died October 21, 1918. Since that time she has made her home with her brother. Eli Smith, and sister, Mrs. Rissler, who have cared for her, she having been in poor health for some time. Besides the two above mentioned she leaves one sister, Mrs. Nan Appleyard of Nebraska, and one brother, Jesse Smith of Osceola, and a number of nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held at the Smith home Monday, January 18 conducted by Rev. Burnette, pastor of the Osceola M. E. church, after which the body was laid to rest in Pleasant Ridge cemetery.
