William Joel Bayliss was the son of Thomas Bayliss and Ann Elizabeth Waters. He was a pioneer resident of Jefferson County; reared and educated near Pastoria. William Joel Bayliss enlisted at Fort Smith on March 1, 1863 as a Private in Company G, 1st Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry, C.S.A. He was honorably discharged that same year on account of disability. He returned to Jefferson County and married Eliza A. Lindsay on October 5, 1869. She bore him four children: Willie Tucker Bayliss, Emma Bayliss, Minnie Lou Bayliss, and Lindsey Elmo Bayliss. Eliza passed away on June 22, 1875 and was buried in the Lindsay family plot. William Joel Bayliss married his second wife, Eleanor S. Cooper, and they had four children together: Walter J. Bayliss, Creed Alcorn Bayliss, Pinkney Bayliss, and Pearl Bayliss. Pearl died as a toddler in 1893.
