Hampton is the son of James Hudgens and Mary "Polly" Hunter Hudgens. He married Eliza Waller on 20 Jan 1842 in Sparta, White County, Tennessee. They were the parents of twelve children, James P., Vance H., Charles, Merrill Doyle, Emma, John/James Edward, Robert Daniel Boone, William S., Stanton, Annie and Amy.
Hampton was a farmer and lived his whole life in White Co., Tennessee. He was counted in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 White County Census.
