Capt Ernst Lindemann
Birth: Mar. 28, 1894
Death: May 27, 1941

German naval officer, commanding officer of the battleship "Bismarck" during its brief time in commission. The "Bismarck" and the heavy cruiser "Prinz Eugen" left Germany in May 1941 to engage Allied commerce in "Operation Rhine" (under the overall command of Admiral Gunther Lutjens). On 24 May 1941 "Bismarck" encountered two British warships, sending one (HMS "Hood") to the bottom within minutes before begining one of the most epic sea chases in maritime history. The "Bismarck" was sunk by a superior British floatilla (as well as scuttling charges by the crew) on 27 May 1941; Captain Lindemann was last seen alive talking with a crewman while standing on the overturned bow of his ship.  (bio by: Brian Macdonald)
