Louis J.Weichmann was an aquaintance of John Surratt, the son of Mary Surratt the only woman hanged for conspiracy in the death of Abraham Lincoln. He and John Surratt had attended a Catholic seminary in preparation of becoming priest. They both left the seminary in 1862. He moved to Washington D.C He was a border at Mary Surratts boarding house. Upon moving to Washington, he taught school at Saint Matthews Institute for boys. In 1864 he became a clerk in the War Department. He testified in the trial of the conspirators. After the Civil War, he moved to Anderson, Indiana and opened a business school. People were skeptical of his testimony, he was a pariah to many and ostracized. He wrote an autobiographical book "A History of the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln" .
