On January 31, 2000 Alaska Airlines Aircraft, a Mcdonnell Douglas MD-83, carrying 83 passengers and 5 crew members, crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Anacapa Island, Ca. The planes tail number was N963AS. Operated by Alaska Airlines, this flight route provided service between Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, San Francisco International Airport, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The crash was caused from mechanical failure. A memorial was erected on the shore near the crash site. A memorial service is conducted each year on the anniversary of the crash.
