3 rd son of Ebenizer and Martha (Hockman) Carruthers. Charles was a stone cutter, as was his father before him. He worked for many private contractors before buying his own business in 1925 from his deceased employer's widow, Mrs. David Hewes. While working for private contractors, he helped cut stone for the Ellis County Courthouse (Texas), the Catholic Church in Fort Worth and many other buildings in the North Texas area. For a period, he cut stone in Mexico for the Mexican Railroad. He married Martha Jane Henderson (Mar. 5, 1870-Aug. 10, 1950) in Cherokee County, Texas on Dec. 28, 1892.
Charles worked until two days before his death even though he was partially paralyzed on his left side from a stroke suffered two years previously. Both he and Martha are burried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
