Jonathan enlisted, as a substitute, to serve as a Private in Company A of the 47th Ohio Infantry on 18 August 1864 while living in Ohio. He was mustered out on 15 August 1865 at Cincinatti, Ohio. John applied for a Civil War invalid's pension on 15 October 1866. Suffered chronic diarrhea as a result of his war experiences.
