Death: Jan. 23, 1888

Thomas R. Bates of Traverse City had enlisted at the age of 24 (listed as 29?) on August 14, 1862, into Co. A. with the "Lake Shore Tigers." He survived the entire war and was mustered out with the regiment on June 4, 1865. He was listed in the November 14, 1883, reunion of the 26th Michigan and died on January 23, 1888, (also listed 1883?) being buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City, Michigan. Of the family, (Thomas?) Morgan Bates had been appointed the Draft Commissioner for Grand Traverse and William Arthur Bates of Traverse City had joined at the on-set of the Civil War into the 1st Wisconsin / 1st Illinois Artillery. (Albert and Sylvester Bates served in Co. E. of the 26th Michigan.)

26th Michigan service included: Alexandria, Washington, Suffolk, the New York Draft Riots, Mine Run, Wilderness, Po River, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor, Petersburg including Deep Bottom, Ream's Station, Cedar Level Station, White Oak Swamp & Hatcher's Run, Fort Fisher, Sayler's Creek & Farmville, Appomattox and The Grand Review.
