Sylvester Bates was wounded in the foot and thigh at Spotsylvania on May 12, 1864, and would be discharged for disability after the war on May 13, 1865, at Detroit, Michigan. He was born in 1834 or 1835 and had enlisted in the 26th Michigan at the age of 27 on August 14, 1862, into Co. E. with Cpl. Albert Bates who had been wounded the previous day (May 11, 1864). 26th Michigan service included: Camp Jackson, Alexandria, Washington, Suffolk, the New York Draft Riots, Mine Run, Wilderness, Po River, & Spotsylvania. Sylvester resided in Hartland Twp, Livingston County, where he died in 1905. His grave is in Lovejoy Cemetery, Vernon Twp, Shiawassee County, Michigan. His Widow, Clara, was Pensioned WC 613,030. Also Thomas R. Bates served in Co. A.
