Albert M. Blackman was born March 6, 1826 in Tiffin, Ohio. He enlisted as Captain of Company H, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 23, 1861, mustering into service April 24, 1861. He served with the regiment through the summer campaign in western Virginia before mustering out August 12, 1861. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted as Lieutenant Colonel of the 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 17, 1861, mustering into service three days later. He resigned his commission August 31, 1862.
He was again commissioned Lieutenant Colonel in the 27th United States Colored Troops on March 24, 1864. Promoted to Colonel to date September 1, 1864, Blackman was later awarded a brevet promotion to Brigadier General to date October 27, 1864. He resigned his commission May 16, 1865.
He died August 5, 1876 at Cresco, Iowa.
