John Calvin Cramer

John Calvin Cramer of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Julesburg, Colorado, passed away Saturday, December 4, 1999, in the hospital in Las Vegas at the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 10 days. Funeral services for John Cramer were held Monday, December 13, 1999 at the Seventh Day Adventist church in Julesburg with Pastor Rex Bell officiating. Interment followed in Hillside Cemetery. Austin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John Calvin Cramer was born February 24, 1911, in Raymond, Nebraska, the son of William Worth Cramer and Birdena Robinson Cramer. When he was 9, he came to live with his grandparents, John W. and Alice Barbara Cramer, in Deuel county. He attended the Pond School, District 58, and worked for farmers in the area during the summers. After he completed his education, he worked for H.W. Renquist, The Cheleens, and Frank Porter on their farms. He worked for a short time at Great Western Sugar Company in 1941. In 1942 he began working for the Union Pacific on the tracks, followed by 11 years at the coal chutes in Julesburg. John also had his own septic tank service, second-hand store, and trailer court, and he worked for Lawrence Lowery part of the time through the years.

On March 24, 1940, John was united in marriage with Sylvia LaVerne Elmquist, daughter of Carl Oscar Elmquist and Esther Leonora Anderson Elmquist at Camp Clark ranch at Bridgeport, Nebraska, home of LaVerne's grandparents. John and LaVerne were the parents of four sons......and one daughter..........

John was a faithful member of the Seventh Day Adventist church in Julesburg, taking an active role in its leadership and development. In his spare time he liked to collect, cut and polish rocks, complete stained glass projects, collect coins, and play pool. He also enjoyed traveling when he was able.

John was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerne, a son, Gary, two granddaughters, his parents, and three brothers. He is survived by three sons, Leland Gayle, Lorn Wayne, William Carl and one daughter, Doris Elaine with whom he had made his home since June, 1998; eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a brother, George Morris Bykerk of Colorado; a sister of Wisconsin, sisters-in-law Bobbie, wife of Ed, of Portland, OR, Wilda, wife of Charles, and wife of Frank of Lincoln, NE and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
