John Joseph Affholter was born April 6, 1842 in Canada and immigrated to the United States about 1850, settling in Dallas Township, Clinton County, Michigan, where he is found farming in the 1870 and 1880 federal census records. He married on May 19, 1863 in Westphalia, Clinton County, Michigan to M. Theresa Mauren. John and Tressie had nine children. According to John's obituary, his children bought him an easy chair for his 60th birthday and he "was highly elated over the gift. While talking with the family and receiving congratulations, he suddenly fell to the floor and in half an hour was dead." His death certificate states he died of cerebral apoplexy. His obituary also states he came to Wyandotte in Wayne County, Michigan ten years ago (so about 1892) from Clinton County. He was survived by seven sons (all residing in Wyandotte, Michigan) and one daughter of Mt Pleasant, Michigan. Another daughter, Anna, wife of Henry Deichelbohrer, died in 1895 of typhoid fever. John was a member of the Carpenter's Union and he is found in the 1900 census at the same place he died, 211 Pine Street, Wyandotte, Michigan. He was buried April 9, 1902. Sadly, two of his sons also died within a year of his death...Ambrose died September 14, 1902 of typhoid fever at the age of 35 and son Albert died March 20, 1903 of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 33 years.
