Motion Picture Editor, Producer. Born Dorothea Corothers Allen, she studied at Scripps College before working as a messenger girl at Columbia Pictures, where she gradually advanced from sound cutter to assistant editor. Her first major assignment as editor was with the Robert Wise picture "Odds Against Tomorrow" (1959). This was followed by the films "The Hustler" (1961) and "America, America" (1963). "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967) established Allen as an innovative force in film editing, as she used trend-setting visual, audio and rate methods. Among the other notable movies she contributed to were "Rachel, Rachel" (1968), "Alice's Restaurant" (1969), "Little Big Man" (1970), "Slaughterhouse-Five" (1972), "Serpico" (1973), "Slap Shot" (1977), "The Wiz" (1978), "The Breakfast Club" (1985), and "The Addams Family" (1991). She earned three Academy Award nominations, for "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975), "Reds" (1981), and "Wonder Boys" (2000). In addition to editing, she served as executive producer for "Reds". She was married to TV news executive Stephen Fleischman, and was the mother of film sound mixer Tom Fleischman. She died of complications from a stroke. (bio by: C.S.)
