John Edward Matcham (Eddie) was the son of George Delorain Matcham (12 May 1843-5 February 1923) and Emma Beatrice Callin (8 July 1885-13 November 1951). He was born in Oberlin, Ohio. His brothers and sisters were: George Matcham II of Punta Gorda FL, Marjorie Young of Punta Gorda, FL, Truman of Erie, PA, and Ruth Heimsath of Cleveland, OH. He attended school in Oberlin before entering the US Army during WWII. He was severely wounded and achieved the rank of Staff Sargeant BSM. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans. He died at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Maywood, IL.
He married Opal Estelle Hindman Blair in Peoria, Illinois in November, 1948. They lived in Peoria and ran a restaurant near Bradley University until his death. He loved Bradley basketball, coin collecting, fishing, and reading history. A reserved and quiet man he nevertheless loved the tumult of Christmas. He was buried on Christmas Eve Day in 1965.
