Bishop Edwin B. Broderick, age 89, Eighth Bishop of Albany, entered into eternal life on Sunday, July 2, 2006. Born in Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of the late Patrick J. and Margaret May O'Donnell Broderick. Bishop Broderick was ordained to the priesthood in St. Patrick's Cathedral on May 30, 1942. In 1954, Pope Pius XII designated Bishop Broderick the United States representative to the Pontifical Commission for Television. During his time as director of radio and television for the Archdiocese of New York, he worked closely with Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen in the production of the late Archbishop's popular television series. In 1954, Cardinal Spellman appointed Bishop Broderick his secretary and master of ceremonies. In 1958 at the election of Pope John XXIII, Bishop Broderick was a conclavist for Cardinal Spellman. In 1964, Cardinal Spellman appointed him rector of St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers, N.Y. The Bishop was honored by the Holy Father on four occasions. In 1954, he was raised to the rank of Papal Chamberlin, in 1958, he was elevated to a Domestic Prelate and in 1964, he was named a Prothonotary Apostolic. On March 8, 1967, Pope Paul VI named him Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York and Titular Bishop of Tizica. In May, 1969, Bishop Broderick was appointed Eighth Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, a ministry he exercised until June 1976. He was elected executive director of Catholic Relief Services, the International Relief Service sponsored by the Catholic Church in the United States. He held that post until 1983. Bishop Broderick was a resident of New York City until his illness in May of 2005, whereupon he became a resident of Teresian House in Albany, New York. Loving uncle of Dr. Robert (Maryanne) Broderick of Long Island, N.Y., John (Marty) Broderick of Dallas, Texas, Edwin Broderick of New York City, Patricia Broderick of New York City, Douglas Broderick (who works for the UN World Food Program in Bangledesh), Mary Broderick, E.A. of Berkely, Calif. and Elizabeth Broderick of Burlingame, Calif.; brother-in-law of Eileen Broderick and June Broderick; also survived by five grandnieces and grandnephews.
