Alonzo was the oldest of the three Stitzle brothers from Butler County, Ohio who enlisted in the 93rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry in August 1862. F Company was known as the "Butler Boys" since most of the men were from Butler County. Alonzo was killed in action at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, at Cheatham Hill, an area that came to be known as "The Dead Angle". Within an hour and a half of fierce fighting, the Union Army lost 1000 men during this skirmish, mostly men from Ohio and Illinois. Private Stitzle was originally buried at Big Shanty, Georgia. The body was later moved to the Marietta National Cemetery.
