A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Auburn, New York, November 26, 1863, and mustered there (unverified) December 2 as a private with Battery I, 9th New York Heavy Artillery. On June 27, 1865, he transferred to Battery I, 2nd New York Heavy Artillery, and honorably discharged with the battery at Fort C. F. Smith, Arlington, Virginia. He is only found in roster of the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery.
When, when, and under what circumstances he came to Lancaster County remain to be discovered. Per his obituary (see attached), he had no family residing there.
