In 1837 William arrived in Missouri from Garrard County, Kentucky. On 16 Oct 1848, William married Missouri Ann Cravens in Howard County, MO.

By the Civil War, he was farming in Prairie township, Chariton County.

At the time of his death, he lived on the west side of Route KK, just south of Highway 24 and north of the railroad tracks (Township 53N, Range 18W, Section 11).

When Missouri Allega died in 1881, William remarried, although Jalie, his second wife, died fairly soon thereafter (1887). Both wives are buried in New Hope Cemetery.

An article in the Chariton Courier in 1895 states that William's parents were buried on the old Preston Gaine's homestead 4 miles northwest of Brunswick. No headstones existed for their graves and the cemetery was plowed over about 1895.
