FORT PLAIN — Mr. Charles Phillip (Phil) Armitstead, 80, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2005, at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born March 10, 1925, in Brewster, Kan., the son of Charles T. and Alma (Schoen) Armitstead.
On March 11, 1947, he married Edna Schwamb in Queens Village.
He was a 1943 graduate of Flagler, Colo. High School. That fall he joined the Navy and served on the USS Silversides and saw action in the Pacific Theatre. After World War II, he worked for Rocky Mountain Bell, New York Bell and the General Telephone Companies.
In 1951, he moved to Clinton Road, Fort Plain, where he began his lifelong entrepreneurial career as a farmer, hay dealer and accomplished auctioneer. He was the co-owner of Mohawk Valley Commission Sales of Little Falls. Phil was very proud of his service to the community, helping and guiding young people while actively participating in many service organizations.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and a 45-year member of the Church Council, serving as the president for many years. He served on the Cherry Valley Central School Board of Education for 30 years, 15 of which he was president. He was a 47-year Mason and Past Master of the Cherry Valley Masonic Lodge 334. He also served as Grand Sword Bearer of the Otsego-Schoharie Masonic District from 2002-2004. He was a director of the Mohawk Minden Ins. Co. and Fulmont Mutual Ins. Co. for more than 25 years.
Other memberships included the OHM Holstein Club, Sprout Brook Rod and Gun Club, and Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 84. In his later years, Phil enjoyed gardening, gem collecting, lapidary and hunting. He especially enjoyed his annual hunting trip to Colorado and his annual rock gem show in Quartzsite, Ariz., where he sold Herkimer diamonds.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Edna; sons and their wives, William and Sarah of Fort Plain, Thomas and Patricia of Fort Plain and Charles Jr. and Cindy of Caroga Lake; daughters and their husbands, Carol and Bruce VanEvera of Canajoharie and Ellen and James Johnson of Cherry Valley; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth, Charlene and Juanita, all of Colorado, and Shirley of Missouri; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, James and Jerry; two sisters, Irene and Bonnie; and a granddaughter, Jessica.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 24, 2005, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Freysbush, with the Rev. Ken Dingman and the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Cherry Valley Cemetery, Cherry Valley.
Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., and a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 23, 2005, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
