Burton was born the son of J. Gould and Marion Smith Bailey. Burton was very beloved husband of Faith P. Bailey, died unexpectedly at their home in Gorham.
Burton was educated in Woolwich public schools and entered the U.S. Navy in February 1945. While in the Navy, he served aboard the USS Allagash.
Upon discharge from the Navy, he married Faith Poulin on May 3, 1945.
Prior to establishing himself as a master carpenter, he worked for the Coca Cola Co. in South Portland and Harris Small Aluminum Windows in Westbrook.
He became associated with highly respected builders of distinctive homes in the Cumberland and Falmouth area. He quickly became known for the quality of his craftsmanship and respected for his integrity.
Prior to his retirement, he spent a number of years as a self-employed contractor including building their new home on Whites Bridge Road in Standish.
In retirement, he greatly enjoyed family life with his children, their spouses and grandchildren. He and Faith loved to travel and to spend time at their cottage on Little Sebego Lake.
He served as a volunteer fireman for more than 35 years with Westbrook Engine No. 3. He was active in the Pride's Corner Congregational Church, teaching Sunday school and serving on the board of trustees.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Faith; his three daughters, Suzanne Bailey Plourde, and husband, John, of Auburn, Sandra Bailey Jones, and husband, Brian, of Scarborough and Sheryl Bailey Waddick, and husband, Robert, of Waltham, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Capt. Christopher Plourde, USAF of Tuscola, Texas, Kevin Plourde, and wife, Nicole, of Seabrook, N.H., Stephanie Jones Wagle, and husband, Joseph, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Kimberly Jones Rowell, and husband, Timothy, of Brookline, Mass., Kathleen Jones of Scarborough and Thomas Bailey Waddick and Karrisa Faith Waddick, of Waltham, Mass.; a great-grandchild, Jack R. Wagle; a brother, Roland, and wife, Esther, of Waldoboro; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Debra Ellen; three brothers, Fernald, Clyde and Earl; and a sister, Dorothy.
