Below is a Washington Post article concerning the late Officer Allen:

Charlie M. Allen, D.C. police officer
By Adam Bernstein, Published: August 1, 2011

Charlie M. Allen, 84, an officer with the D.C. Metropolitan Police from 1951 to 1974, died July 25 at his home in Lanham, Maryland.

A spokeswoman for the Maryland Medical Examiner's Office said a determination of the cause of death is pending further tests

As a motorcycle officer in the early 1960s, Mr. Allen was part of the motorman police escort for President John F. Kennedy's inauguration parade. He also participated in the police escort accompanying President Lyndon B. Johnson from the airport to the White House after Kennedy's assassination.

In 1964, Mr. Allen was on his way to work when he was hit by a car. The injuries were severe, and he remained on disability until retirement. He later had his legs amputated.

In the early 1970s, he helped push for an ultimately successful effort in Congress to cover the medical expenses of D.C. police and firefighters forced to retire early because of disabilities.

Charlie Mack Allen was born in Durham, North Carolina. During World War II, he served in the Navy and participated in the Normandy invasion. After the invasion, he served in the Marine Corps.

He was a life member of the National Rifle Association.

His wife of 64 years, Shirley Hughes Allen, died in 2007. Survivors include two children, John Allen of Lanham and Stacy Berg of Millersville, Maryland; two sisters, June Dearstein of Glendale, Maryland, and Marie Peacock of Orlando; and three grandchildren.
