Ed was the grandfather of my niece's husband. He was a great outdoorsman, and sadly, I didn't realize how wonderful he was until I read his obituary.
Below is his obituary as it appeared in The Sheboygan Press:
Edward W. Lorenz, age 76, died Friday morning, January 1, 2010 at St. Nicholas Hospital with his family by his side.
Edward was born May 20, 1933 in Sheboygan to William and Leona (Widder) Lorenz.
He was a graduate of Sheboygan Central High School, Class of 1952.
Following graduation he enlisted in the US Army in March of 1954 until February of 1956, stationed in Erlangen, Germany. While in the Army, Edward and Jill Klaus were united in marriage in Sheboygan.
Following his honorable discharge, Edward was employed at a number of companies, retiring from Pemco, Inc. in 1993.
He was a passionate hunter and sportsman and was a Wisconsin Hunter Safety instructor for over twenty-five years. He held memberships in the Riverside Rifle and Pistol Club, the Farmer's and Sportsmen's Conservation Club, the NRA, and was a sponsor member of Duck's Unlimited. For over forty years Edward shot trap, competing at State and National levels. He also worked closely with Sheboygan County High School Trap teams. He was proud to share his passion of trap shooting with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid Wisconsin sports enthusiast and enjoyed following his children's and grandchildren's sporting events. In his younger years he spent great times up north with his hunting buddies at their cabin, Martini Hollow in Phillips, WI where he was better known as "Mac the Knife". For many years he was a member of the Sheboygan Bowling Association.
Edward is survived by five children, Mary Jo (Michael) Robinson, William L. (Susan) Lorenz, Jean (Edward) Wodach all of Sheboygan, Donna Lynn (George) Sessler of Brookfield, WI and Cynthia (Kevin) Sistler of DePere, WI; ten grandchildren, Jennifer Robinson, Joshua (Kate) Robinson, Jessica Robinson (special friend, Lorenzo Macias), Erik Lorenz, Kelsey Lorenz, Trevor Sistler, Eli Edward Sistler, Kyle Hemsing, Nathan Sessler, and Theodore Sessler; two great-grandchildren, Tia Robinson and Austin Martinez; one sister, Linda (Robert) Coulson of Sheboygan; and other family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Jill Lorenz Senkbeil.
A Memorial service was held on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at the Chapel of Eternal Light at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Rev. William McCaskill, Pastor of New Life Community Church in Plymouth, officiated. Full military honors were conducted by VFW #9156.
"Big Eddie" will be "deerly" missed by his family and friends.
In the words of Louie Armstrong, "What a wonderful world, oh yeah."
