Birth: Nov. 3, 1905
St. Louis City
Missouri, USA
Death: Mar. 21, 1963
University City
St. Louis County
Missouri, USA

Mr. Raymond Bruno, a retired University City Police Detective, expired ay his home at 7043 Melrose Avenue in University City. He was 57 years of age.

"On 5-17-59 Detective Raymond Bruno and his partner Stanley Topper, responded to a "Call for Police" at a drug store in the 6600 block of Olive Street in University City. What they interrupted was a Hold-up in Progress resulting in a close quarters exchange of gunfire wherein all four men were shot. Detective Bruno, the first in the door was shot in the chest while one of the armed intruders was shot dead, the second gunman, superficially wounded, escaping on foot while Detective Topper, who was shot in the arm, stayed with his more seriously wounded partner.

Later that same day, the man responsible for shooting the officers, was arrested in the City of St. Louis, charged, and ultimately convicted, and later sentenced to a Federal Penitentiary for his crimes.

Detective Bruno died within a few years, possibly from complications arising from the shooting. Detective Topper went on to serve as Chief of Police in University City. The details of the bizarre shooting and capture of the prison escapee who shot the officers was later documented in a book...see "www.curbstonejustice.com."

His wake and funeral was held at Ortmann's Funeral Home located at 9222 Lackland Rd. in Overland Missouri

He left to mourn his passing his wife Margaret of the home, and 2 sons, Thomas and John Bruno.

Internment was held at Calvary Cemetery on March 25, 1963.
