Officer Chester I. Abernathy, DSN 0005, received his commissioned as a Police Officer on 07/26/1954 and entered the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Departments' Academy. Upon completion of the academy Officer Abernathy's first uniform assignment was the 1St District, located at 909 Holly Hills. Officer Abernathy remained in this assignment through out his entire career. It should be noted that very few Officers remain in one assignment during their entire career. That in itself tells you about the character of the Officer. During his career he was awarded 1 Chief's Letter of Commendation for police work above the call of duty on 06/07/1961. When Officer Abernathy finally retired on 01/28/1983, he had completed 28 years, 6 months, and 2 days of faithful and dedicated service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Officer Abernathy was also a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, and served during World War II, achieving the rank of Seaman, which is an E-3. His son Thomas, followed in the footsteps of his father and became the 2Nd generation of the family to serve on the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department, retiring in 2008.
