On June 24th, 1947, while flying near Mt. Rainier, Washington, Kenneth Arnold spotted a group of nine objects flying in formation. He described them as "saucer shaped," and said that their movement resembled "a saucer skipped across water." From this description, the term "flying saucer," was coined.
Already a successful business owner, Arnold would go on to write two UFO related books and would unsuccessfully run for Lieutenant Governor of his home state of Idaho in 1962.
