Richard Allen Lugenbeel, 74, a resident of Lacey, Washington since August 1977 died of a severe congestive heart failure and went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 19, 2009.
He was born on October 9, 1934 in Pleasant Hill, Mo. to Homer Homboldt Lugenbeel and Ruth Irene (Lightfoot) Lugenbeel. His father was a machinist and his mother a homemaker.
Richard married Sharlene Annabelle Smith on December 19, 1959 at a Methodist Church in Yelm, Washington.
Preceding Richard in death are his parents and his brother, Donald Allen Lugenbeel.
Richard is survived by his wife Sharlene; two sons, Richard Allen (Janene) Lugenbeel Jr. and Curtis Lyle (Virginia) Lugenbeel; daughter, Deborah Lynn (Terry) Tharp; 7 grandchildren, Jamie Lynn and Jeana Anne Lugenbeel, Elizabeth Ann and Rebekah Lynn Tharp, Ernest Urrutia, Jr., Kelly Denise and Richard Curtis Lugenbeel; 2 great-grandchildren, Nicholas Andrews Taylor and Holly Noelle Lugenbeel. He and Sharlene hosted many foreign-exchange students from Japan who quickly became part of the family. They proudly call him "dad" and his daughter count went from one to many! He is also survived by two sisters, Mildred Ann Smith and Betty Jo Vaughn; a brother, James Duane Lugenbeel.
He went in the Navy on June 21, 1956 and served 20 years. He was an aircraft engine mechanic, division supervisor and instructor for Class "A" School teaching aircraft engines and related systems. He worked at South Sound Bank in Lacey as a courier. Richard was also employed at the Evergreen State College for 9 years before medically retiring.
His hobbies were woodworking, boating, fishing, camping, reading, and daily word search puzzles; but, his greatest joy was being with family.
He was member of Westwood Baptist Church where he was baptized on April 7, 1985. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shrine and Eastern Star.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 24, 2009 with Pastor Terry E. Tharp officiating. A graveside service will be held at Mills and Mills Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. with viewing prior to service form 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Memorial service will be held at Westwood Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m..
