Clarence William Akers

PRINCETON - Clarence William Akers, 84, of 187 Dolittle Lane went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 19. He passed away at St. Luke's Hospital in Bluefield as a result of complications from diabetes.

Born April 13, 1919 at Arista, he was the son of the late Charlie and Florence Justice Akers. Clarence was a shuttle car operator with 26 years of service working for Consol Coal Co. He was employed at the Weynoka Coal Company in Arista until his retirement. He was a member of the UMWA. Mr. Akers served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the 3rd Infantry Division as Private First Class fc. 1st Class. His tour of duty took him to Africa and Italy. He was wounded in Sicily and returned to the US in the Mid 40s and received a Purple Heart and a Good Conduct Medal. He was a former member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 31 of Princeton and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3112 of Bluewell. He was educated in Mercer County and was of the Holiness faith and also he attended the Echoes From Calvary Church.

Clarence was an avid outdoorsman who loved gardening and producing "the largest" German Tomatoes in the community. He also enjoyed flea marketing, gun trading, fishing and coon hunting. He was a former member of the National Coon Hunters' Association.

In addition to his parents, Clarence was preceded in death by one daughter, Pauline Gay Akers; five brothers, Claborne, Twins Ray and Roy, Jesse and Otis Akers; one half brother, Murray Cruise; a half sister, Virginia Cruise; and a grandson, Mitchell Wayne Johnson.

Survivors are wife of 62 years, Mary Louise Combs Akers of Princeton; children, Willard Akers and wife, Vickie, Linda Walker, and Judy Nelson and husband, Thurman, all of Glenwood; grandchildren, Alan Walker and wife, Sabrina, Sheila Johnson and husband, Timmy, Cathy Martin, Tammy Taylor and husband, Glen, James Nelson and Eric Akers; eight great-grandchildren, Brittney, Kenny Lee, Chelsy, Jessica Nicole, Sheldon, Morgan, Kristen and Benjamin; sisters, Helen Hurst and Ruby Combs, both of Glenwood, and Betty Mills and husband, Basil of Beeson; and brother, Clinton Akers and wife, Oma of Matoaka.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Mrs. Lillian Shewbridge officiating and Mr. Vernon Fields delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Shrewsbury Family cemetery in Beeson next to the Beeson Chapel where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council.

Friends may call today from 5-8 p.m. in the Laurel Room of the Memorial Funeral Directory.

Pallbearers will be Onsby Hurst, Clinton Akers Jr., Clinton Akers II, Steve Marsh, Terry Combs and Chris Miller.
